Off to the Village...

...to buy some buttons.

What buttons would you put on this dress?

This is one of the items I made at Sewjourn, The Village Frock, a pattern by Sugar City Journal.
The pattern is not available any more so I was glad I purchased it on a whim, hoping to one day make it.
I actually cut it out at SIT in May and had not touched it til Sewjourn - ahh bliss!

It's made in a lightweight denim, so it drapes quite nicely.

I love this dress - and I am glad I decided to keep the fabric choice simple and let the design speak for itself.

I did learn that the next time I make this I will take care not to accidentally pull on both the bobbin and needle threads when gathering - bad move!

I will also be sure to put the gathering stitches in using a different coloured thread so they are easier to get out.

But now - what buttons??
Self-covered, a pop of colour (red??) or something neutral like silver or wood buttons??

I await your suggestions!

  1. I was just thinking a burst of colour would look fantastic but then you suggested silver and I thought now that would look pretty cool too.

Sorry not much help really - fantastic job though.

  2. ohhhh very interesting dress!

Red buttons (perhaps interesting red fabric covered buttons) sound just the thing.

  3. Ooooh, I, like you, bought this on a whim and it has been in my "to do" pile ever since. Looks lovely in that fabric. I should get onto it. As for the buttons...hard to say. They would probably all work- it just depends on the statement that you want to make- I am an expert fence sitter ;)

  4. Not covered. Not covered with the same material anyhow. Silver or red sounds fantastic.
... I think you'll know them when you see them. Good luck!

(and now I'm pulling my tantrum face because that pattern is no longer available!)

  6. Hi Karen,
What a beautiful job you've done! It's such a gorgeous pattern - I just wish I'd known about it before it disappeared!
My first thought was red buttons, but now I'm thinking red fabric covered buttons (maybe a print with a dull bluish tone too?) but the idea of silver, or pewter, is also lovely too!
    Good luck!

  10. I'm thinking some domed buttons with a shank - sort of like Mastermind pieces. Maybe red? Perhaps a glossy black? Maybe even pearly looking?

  11. I love the idea of wooden buttons - something simple, but will enhance the other elements of the dress. (I did at first think red... but wooden ones will go with ANY accessories, and look natural).
What ever you decide on, I'm sure it will look fantastic.
WHY didn't they make things like this when I was a kid? :)

  12. I definately go with buttons that pop; shiny, bright buttons would really look great. Looks like a great pattern, I like something a little different (that doesn't look too complicated to make). Nice job!

  13. I bought that pattern when it first came out, traced, cut and...never sewed it. It won't fit Munchkin now for sure!

I vote for fabric covered buttons.

  16. I love the dress! How gorgeous :) Buttons - definitely something that contrasts a little, so prob not self covered. I love the idea of red, or maybe a wooden button. Whatever it is should be quite large and chunky I think :)
